Making the most of the infrastructure boom for your small to medium business

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

There’s no doubt about the infrastructure boom happening in several Australian states. New South Wales is seeing a boost in residential & commercial developments, the WestConnex and NorhConnex tunnels, the upcoming Western Sydney Airport, and the major M12 motorway, to name just a few. In Victoria, there are major projects popping up in Melbourne, and Adelaide is still building major roads after its Superway. And don't forget Brisbane and Perth. Nor the large regional centres like Newcastle and the ACT. There are projects happening all around us.

So if you have services or goods you can supply to these industries, you need to make sure you’re doing everything you can to secure your piece of this substantially large pie.

Understand the Procurement Process

Get to know how larger infrastructure and development firms approve suppliers as part of their procurement process. This will be, if anything, your biggest hurdle.

What information do you need to gather and submit to be considered as a supplier? Ask! Pick up the phone and ask. Collect certifications, have a capability statement, testimonials and more. You can never have too much information.

Network like a Boss

Get out there and meet people. Attend all the events relevant to the infrastructure boom. Meet people at the events, talk about who you are and what you do. Learn what you can -- and from as many people as you can.

Follow up with key contacts. Build a rapport with people. Remember people hire people. So keep up appearances and invest your time well by attending the right functions (and meetings).

Tender Websites & Alerts

Make sure you are subscribed to tender-related websites and alerts to receive information about when tenders are open.

For example, make sure you are checking out the tenders for

Stay Updated (News)

The final piece of advice is to stay updated with what is in the news. Set up Google alerts if needed to keep on top of what is happening, where and who is involved. This will help a great deal in your tendering submissions but more importantly when you are networking the room at an industry event.

Keep an eye on the business news about major firms involved in infrastructure; such as John Holland, Lendlease, CPB, Acciona, Ferovial, Laing O'Rourke, Aecomm, Arup and others. These are the giants in the industry, and when they get business, lots of other firms get business from them.

These massive infrastructure projects always comprise a multitude of other smaller subcontracting for goods and services, so pinpoint what you can offer and make sure they know about you.
